Spinale tumoren zijn zeldzaam. Ze kunnen gelokaliseerd zijn in of rond de wervelzuil. De meeste tumoren die van de wervelkolom zelf, dus van het bot, uitgaan zijn metastasen (uitzaaiingen van een tumor in een ander orgaan) . Tumoren kunnen ook ontstaan binnen het spinaal kanaal en ontstaan dan vanuit de dura mater (die het ruggenmerg en de zenuwen omgeeft) of de zenuwstructuren zelf (ruggenmerg en zenuwen).
Al deze tumoren kunnen pijn en neurologische symptomen (verlamming, gevoelsstoornissen) veroorzaken wanneer ze groeien.
Tumoren van het ruggenmerg zijn meestal astrocytomen en ependymomen, maar ook hemangioblastomen (alle zogenaamde intramedullaire tumoren gezien ze in het ruggenmerg – medulla- ontstaan). Extramedullaire tumoren kunnen ontstaan vanuit de dura mater maar eveneens vanuit de (isolerende laag van) de spinale zenuwen.
Een operatie is de eerste stap in de behandeling van deze tumoren. Aangezien het ruggenmerg en de spinale zenuwen zeer delicate structuren zijn, vereist het opereren van dergelijke tumoren een meticuleuze techniek. Het monitoren van de functie van het ruggenmerg en de spinale zenuwen tijdens deze operaties, met gebruik van een specifiek systeem van neuromonitoring, is vaak essentieel voor een goede postoperatieve outcome. Tumors of the spinal cord include mostly astrocytomas and ependymomas, but also hemangioblastomas (all so-called intramedullary tumors since they are located in the spinal cord or medulla).
