Spasticiteit

[:nl]

Spasticity is a non-controllable muscular cramp in arms and legs which may cause pain and hinder movement. It is a typical consequence of lesions of the central nervous system and involves paralysis.

The basic therapy for spasm is physical therapy.

The local administration of botulinum toxin is a method which can be used in focal und regional spasm.

The medical therapy with baclofen is applied orally at first, but it can also be given intrathecally (within the dural sack that covers the spinal cord). For this purpose, a pump is surgically implanted underneath the skin which continually injects the medication into the spinal fluid.
